Heavy Dross
Excessive molten material adheres to the bottom edge of cuts, creating hard slag deposits that require secondary processing to remove.


- Rough Bottom Edge: Uneven, jagged texture on the underside of the cut edge with visible slag deposits. Affects part quality and requires grinding.
- Slag Adhesion: Hard, firmly attached dross that cannot be easily brushed off. Requires chipping or grinding to remove, increasing per-part cost.
- Inconsistent Pattern: Dross appears intermittently along the cut path, varying in thickness. Straight sections may be clean while corners accumulate slag.
- Partial Dross Only: Dross only on corners or tight radii while straight cuts remain clean. Indicates speed-related rather than parameter-related root cause.
This issue involves the following machine subsystems:
Gas pressure and nozzle diameter directly determine molten material ejection efficiency from the kerf.
Focus position and cutting speed settings affect energy distribution at the bottom of the cut.
Nozzle Mismatch
Using a nozzle diameter too small for the material thickness restricts gas flow and fails to eject molten material effectively from the kerf.
Gas Pressure Imbalance
Insufficient gas pressure fails to provide enough kinetic energy to fully expel molten material from the cutting kerf.
Focus Position Error
Focus set too high above the material surface reduces the power density at the bottom of the cut, leaving incomplete penetration.
Excessive Cutting Speed
Feed rate too high for the given material thickness and laser power results in incomplete molten material ejection.
