Carbon Steel6mm

Edge Quality Instability on 6mm Carbon Steel

Problem

Customer reported intermittent edge quality — cuts started clean but degraded after 15-20 minutes of continuous operation.

Root Cause

Thermal drift in the cutting head caused gradual focus shift. Combined with worn nozzle (2.0mm used for 3+ shifts without replacement).

Solution

Replaced nozzle with 1.6mm precision type. Adjusted focus offset from -4mm to -5mm. Implemented 15-min consumable check cycle.

Result: Stable edge quality maintained over 2-hour continuous run. 40% reduction in post-processing time.

Stainless Steel12mm

Heavy Dross on 12mm Stainless Steel Plate

Problem

Persistent heavy dross on bottom edge of 12mm SS304 cuts. Required grinding on every part, adding 3+ minutes per piece.

Root Cause

Nitrogen pressure too low (8 bar) for 12mm thickness. Nozzle diameter undersized at 2.0mm for the required gas flow.

Solution

Increased nitrogen pressure to 14 bar. Switched to 3.0mm nozzle. Adjusted focus to -4mm (65% plate thickness).

Result: Dross-free cuts achieved. Grinding eliminated. Cycle time reduced by 35%.
6kW Fiber Laser
Aluminum3mm

Burr Formation in Aluminum Cutting

Problem

Sharp burrs on both sides of 3mm aluminum cuts. Parts required manual deburring, slowing production to 60% capacity.

Root Cause

Cutting speed too low (2800 mm/min) causing excess heat buildup. Gas mixture ratio off for aluminum grade 5052.

Solution

Increased speed to 3800 mm/min. Switched to nitrogen + 3% oxygen mix. Reduced focus offset to -2mm.

Result: Burr-free cuts. Production speed restored to 100% capacity. No secondary processing needed.
